If you’re obsessed with a Greggs-style steak bake, this easy copycat recipe is about to become your new favourite. Think flaky puff pastry, a rich beef and gravy filling, and that classic bakery-style comfort – but made at home, with no queues and no lukewarm disappointment. This homemade version is simple to make, packed with flavour, and honestly just hits better fresh from your own oven.
Perfect for a cosy lunch, fakeaway dinner, or feeding fellow Greggs lovers, this steak bake recipe delivers all the nostalgia with extra gravy and proper heat. Once you try it, you’ll never look at the bakery counter the same way again.

Ingredients
Greggs-Style Steak Bake (makes 6)
- 400g diced beef
- 500ml boiling water
- 4 heaped tbsp gravy granules
- 1 rich beef stock pot
- 1 garlic clove
- 1tsp black pepper
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1tbsp mustard
- 1tsp dried mixed herbs
- 1-2tsp honey
Other items needed
- 2 sheets puff pastry
- 1 egg (use the egg yolk & half the white to make the pastry golden brown)
Instructions
- Cut the beef into smaller chunks.
- Heat a little oil in a frying pan, brown the beef with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Remove from the heat.
- Add the gravy granules and beef stick pot into a measuring just with 500ml boiling water, stir to combine.
- Add the beef in the saucepan back on low heat-medium heat. Pour the gravy in top.
- Add all the minced garlic glove, black pepper, ketchup and honey.
- Stir until combined, the gravy should start to become thicker.
- Add the mustard and mixed herbs, stir to combine.
- Pour in the red wine, stir to combine, reduce the heat to low and cover for 1 hour 30 minutes. Every 20 minutes give it a stir.
- Once the beef is soft and tender (it might take longer) remove from the heat.
- Leave the gravy to completely cool. Then place in the fridge to chill and become less runny.
Assemble
- Using a knife cut the puff pastry sheets into 12 rectangles, place some spoonfuls of the chilled beef and gravy in the middle of six.
- Use a knife and score waves on the remaining 6 puff pastry rectangles, place on top.
- Push the edges down, then use a fork to stick the edges together.
- Egg wash, then bake in the oven for 20 minutes at 180c fan.
