Delicious alternative fillings to try:

  • Caramelised red onions, feta, and spinach – a slightly sweet, tangy combo that feels fancy but still comforting.
  • BBQ chicken and mozzarella – smoky, cheesy, and amazing with a drizzle of BBQ sauce “blood.”
  • Mushroom, garlic, and truffle oil – rich, earthy, and perfect for adults who love a savoury twist.
  • Chorizo, roasted peppers, and cheddar – adds a kick of spice and colour inside your spooky skulls.
  • Ham, pineapple, and mozzarella – for a cheeky Halloween take on Hawaiian pizza.
  • Goat’s cheese, sundried tomato, and basil – creamy, tangy, and slightly indulgent.
  • Buffalo chicken and blue cheese – ideal if you want your skulls to bite back with bold flavour.
  • Pesto, mozzarella, and cherry tomatoes – bright and herby with melty cheese oozing out.

FAQS: How to make the Best Pizza Skulls for Halloween

Can I make Pizza Skulls without a skull mould
Yes! If you don’t have a skull-shaped mould, you can use a muffin tin instead – they’ll still bake up into fun, bite-sized Halloween pizza bombs. You can even shape them by hand and seal the edges for a rustic look.

Can I make Pizza Skulls ahead of time
Absolutely. These are a great make-ahead Halloween snack. Bake them earlier in the day, let them cool, then reheat in the oven for 5–7 minutes before serving. They’ll still be perfectly cheesy and spooky.

What kind of dough works best
Use ready-made pizza dough or crescent roll dough for the easiest results. Homemade dough works too – just make sure it’s not too thick so the skull details show clearly after baking.

Can I freeze Pizza Skulls
Yes! Once baked and cooled, freeze your Pizza Skulls in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Reheat them straight from frozen in the oven until warmed through and crispy.

What fillings can I use
You can fill them with anything you love on pizza – pepperoni, cheese, mushrooms, ham, or veggies. For a Halloween twist, try adding black olives for “eyes” or drizzle with pizza sauce “blood” for extra spook factor.

How do I keep the skull shape defined
The key is to grease your mould well and press the dough firmly into all the details before filling. You can chill the filled moulds for 5–10 minutes before baking – this helps the dough hold its creepy shape. I did not do this for mine and the skull shape still looked very detailed.

Are Pizza Skulls kid-friendly
Definitely! Kids love helping fill the skulls and watching the cheesy centres ooze out. It’s a fun Halloween food idea for families and a total hit at Halloween parties for kids. Just make sure you do not give them to the kids straight out the oven as the filling will be very hot!
